The consensus last night at dinner was that this was one of the worst Kentucky Derby stories ever.
Won by an arrogant trainer with a long history of rules violations and suspensions (dare I say one of the biggest cheats in the game), backed by a Wall Street group that wants to create a horse racing hedge fund, followed by the best potential story of the race -- a filly who runs second -- having to be euthanized.
The only way this could have been worse would have been if Eight Belles had won the race instead of coming in second, her fatal injury leaving no champion to present the garland of roses to in the winner's circle.
I was supposed to be in Lexington hours ago to meet my family, so I'm about to leave -- more updates later in the evening.

It is, indeed, a sour victory. It's impossible to like Rick Dutrow, and therefore very hard to root for Big Brown. There will always be doubts about whether they cheated with him somewhere along the way, and if BB wins the Triple Crown, it may be similar to Barry Bonds breaking the number of home runs. Big Brown Wins* the Triple Crown.
* Perhaps with some herbal assistance.
Even if he is legitimate, his victories will probably always be overshadowed by this big, depressing footnote.
I agree. It is very hard to like the Dutrow/IEAH group.
The behavior of Big Brown's drunken posse following the Derby was sickening. Eight Belles died from greed and the senseless pursuit of human ego. The whole Derby "scene" of rich, pompous animal abusers is disgusting. I am encouraging a boycott of all Yum restaurants. Money, money, money. God bless Eight Belles.
Let's not forget the other feel good story of Midnight Cry stables winning the turf race.
Worst Derby ever, indeed. Of course, now all horse racing fans are catching flak from the PETA minions who think we're all about animal abuse.
Can it get any worse being a horse racing fan? Sure....just wait till they close Pimlico and Hollywood and more of our history is gone.
God I hope we get a good Preakness. God I hope we get Curlin back soon. We need a hero now more than ever.
