My wife and I were standing in the middle of my living room both yelling at the television -- that's how I'll remember the Rags to Riches victory in the Belmont.
It wasn't the exacta, trifecta and decent win bet that I placed on her that got me so excited (even though the bets pulled me out an otherwise devastating day for my daily budget); it was something else.
While I was happy for Todd Pletcher, and happy that it quieted everyone who kept bringing up Silverbulletday when I would mention that I liked Rags to win (something that I didn't think was relevant)... it wasn't those things that had me cheering (no, yelling "Come on Johnny" at my television) either. I'm genuinely excited for the sport.
Street Sense, Curlin, Hard Spun, Rags to Riches... and that's just the three year olds. I can't wait for the rest of 2007... I just hope that the excitement doesn't end in late October on the Jersey shore and will continue into 2008.
I was glad to hear owner Michael Tabor say that he plans to send this filly to the Alabama but since the race isn't until August 18th, I hope that they'll send her to the earlier two legs of the NY Triple Tiara, which in 2003 was changed to the Mother Goose, Coaching Club American Oaks and Alabama (no bonus exists here either).
The Grade I races remaining on the calendar for fillies through the Alabama are all in New York, and although since doubt we'll see her in the Prioress or Test (sprints), these Tiara races are the only likely Grade I races on the calendar for her. She won four Grade I races in a row, how many more can she add to her impressive resume:
Date Race Distance Track
6/30 Mother Goose 1 1/8 miles Belmont Park
7/21 CCA Oaks 1 1/4 miles Belmont Park
8/18 Alabama 1 1/4 miles Saratoga
And if Mr. Tabor is feeling lucky, here are the open Grade I races:
Date Race Distance Track
8/5 Haskell Invitational 1 1/8 miles Monmouth Park
8/25 Kings Bishop 7 furlongs Saratoga
8/25 Travers 1 1/4 Saratoga

Cannot wait to see her run again! What about Curlin, what is his future now? What races will he run in after a well deserved rest?
I would have to think that this year's Haskell will be a good spot with the Breeders' Cup being at Monmouth this year.
