Bad News for Gomez, Good Attitude by Asmussen

While the details of where racing fans can expect to see Rags to Riches start next remains up in the air, the question about who will ride her looks to have an answer. According to The Albany Times-Union, it looks like Garrett Gomez, who was Rags to Riches regular rider, may end up with the short end of the stick when all is said and done. You'll remember that Gomez agreed to ride Hard Spun when it looked like the filly wouldn't enter the Belmont, and once she was, was unable to get released from his Hard Spun commitment.

So what does trainer Todd Pletcher think about who will ride next?

From The Albany Times-Union:

"Ron Anderson (Gomez's agent) is a very good agent," Pletcher said. "He asked me that question before the race. I told him it's going to be awfully hard for me to take Johnny [Valazquez] off if this filly wins. It's very unfortunate for Garrett. I feel badly for him, for Ron Anderson."

"It's unfortunate for him. Definitely," Velazquez said. "He has won on some horses I was riding and he kept the horses. In this case, I was the winner."

Unfortunate, but as Johnny points out it happens; this just happens to be a high profile filly that is a now a winner of a triple crown race.

In another story from the same paper, we also see that Curlin trainer Steve Asmussen has a good attitude about his colt's second place finish, which came the same way he beat Street Sense in The Preakness: at the wire.

According to the Times-Union:

"We lose one the exact same way we won one," Asmussen said, shaking his head. "That's horse racing. Until the last jump, I thought he was going to win."
